Prahlad Jani From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Prahlad Jani was born on 13 August 1929 in Charada village in India (now in Mehsana district, Gujarat, India).[1] According to Jani, he left his home in Gujarat at the age of seven, and went to live in the jungle.[citation needed] At the age of 12, Jani underwent a spiritual experience and became a follower of the Hindu goddess Amba. From that time, he chose to dress as a female devotee of Amba, wearing a red sari-like garment, jewellery and crimson flowers in his shoulder-length hair.[citation needed] Jani was commonly known as Mataji ("[a manifestation of] The Great Mother"). Jani believed that the Goddess provided him with water which dropped down through a hole in his palate, which allowed him to live without food or drink.[1] Since the 1970s, Jani had lived as a hermit in a cave in the forest in Gujarat. Goddess abused

In ancient times, animal sacrifices were offered at the temple, mostly in the forms of birds and goats, by devotees seeking protection and the fulfillment of their prayers. At the intervention of many "social reformers," the government of Cochin banned animal sacrifice in any form at this place. At present, only red-dyed dhotis are offered to the deity. Many devotees offer rich presents and gold ornaments. The idol of bhagawati is about seven feet high and made of wood, carved from a jackfruit tree. The idol has eight arms that carry weapons and symbols. To the left of the temple sits a small stone structure called 'the Samadhi of Vysoori', perhaps a medieval shrine for a deity of smallpox, chicken pox, mumps and other contagious diseases. Devotees make offerings of turmeric powder, sprinkled and rubbed on its walls. About fifty metres further is a sacred pond called (Pushkarini), where devotees bathe before entering the main shrine. It is believed that this po...

It is one of the oldest of the 51 Shakti Peethas in the Indian subcontinent. The temple does not have a sculpture to worship, however, what it does have is the yoni or vagina of Devi Sati, the wife of Lord Shiva, covered with a red silk sari. Every year during monsoon, the goddess menstruates, and the temple is closed down for three days. It is also when the Tantric fertility festival or Ambubachi Mela is celebrated here, till the fourth day when the temple reopens. It is also said that the underground spring that flows in the sanctum of the temple turns red on these three days. temple superstitions

Temples & Taboos India is a land of contradictions. While cutting-edge technology drives us forward, religious superstitions which befuddle the mind take us in the opposite direction. Even the sudden death of advocate T P Sundararajan, whose legal intervention led to stock-taking in Sree Padmanabha Swamy temple, was said to be "divine retribution". Was it? Who can tell? Superstitions abound all over India. Who are we to tempt the gods, ask believers. Take Renuka Temple in Kullu where goddess Renuka Devi is worshipped. Villagers are so fearful of inviting the wrath of her husband, Rishi Jamdagni, that they dare not look at her idol. Even the priest enters only after covering his face with a white cloth during Navratra and Fagli when the temple door is opened. Women throw their offerings from afar. Shobha Ram, the priest, explains: "Everybody is aware of Jamdagni’s rage. He once got so angry with his wife that he ordered his son Parshuram to kill her." Bir Sing...

Why were temples built? Why do we worship idols?

Why were temples built? Why do we worship idols? SATGURU JAGGI VASUDEV....    What you call a temple is like putting a hole in the fabric, creating a space where the physical becomes thin and something beyond becomes visible to you. This science of making the physical less manifest is the science of consecration, so that dimension beyond the physical becomes apparent or visible to you if you are willing. To take the analogy further, it is like the temple is a hole in the fabric of the physical, where you could fall through easily and go beyond.    In this country, in ancient times, temples were built only for Shiva, nobody else. It was only later that the other temples came up because people started focusing on immediate wellbeing. Using this science, they started creating various other forms, which they could use to benefit themselves in so many different ways in terms of health, wealth, and wellbeing. They created different types of energies and different ki...
